Central Government:

The Nehru-Gandhi Family:

This family gets regarded as the most significant and powerful families of India. The first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru’s lineage has been in power in the country ever since India got its Independence in 1947. In 70 years, out of 16 Prime Ministers, this family has given 3 Prime Ministers to India. The Indian National Congress(INC) has had an upper hand in elections. It was the same until the INC’s recent defeat by the hands of the BJP. Out of the 15 general elections, since India’s Independence, the INC was on six. They won it with an outright majority. The INC has lead a coalition government, four times. In total, they have headed the central government for 49 years out of 71 years of Independence. Pt. Motilal Nehru, father of Jawaharlal Nehru was an important leader of India. He had a huge role in Indian politics during the pre-independence era. He was also the President of the INC twice from 1919-1920 and 1928-1929. Ever since independence, the leaders of the INC have been members of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Indira Gandhi became India,s first woman Prime Minister in 1966. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru. After her assassination, Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India. He was the eldest son of Indira Gandhi. After Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, his wife Sonia Gandhi stepped up. She became the President of the INC in 1998, seven years after Rajiv’s demise. She resigned from her post in and the mantel was later passed on to her son Rahul Gandhi. Rahul became the 49th President of the INC in 2017. Both Sonia and Rahul are Members of the Parliament from Raebareli and Amethi.

Sanjay Gandhi, Indira’s youngest son was an important political figure in Indian politics. He passed away at an early age in a plane crash. His wife Maneka Gandhi, and son Varun Gandhi are key leaders in the BJP.

State Government:

The Yadav’s (in Bihar):

The presence of the infamous Lalu Yadav is well known by all. He is an Indian politician and is the most influential person in Bihar along with his family. Lalu served as the Chief Minister of Bihar from 1990 to 1997. The wife of Lalu Yadav, Rabri Devi took over as CM of the state after Lalu’s conviction in the fodder scam. Lalu’s presence in the politics of Bihar is further cemented through his sons. Lalu’s son Tej Pratap Yadav is a former Cabinet Minister for Health in the Bihar government. Tejaswi Yadav the second son of Lalu, was the Ex-Deputy CM of Bihar. He currently is the leader of the opposition party in Bihar’s Legislative Assembly. Lalu’s elder daughter Misa Bharti is a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. Rajlakshmi Yadav got married to Mulayam Singh’s grandnephew, Tej Pratap. She is Lalu’s youngest daughter. Mulayam Singh is an influential politician in Uttar Pradesh. Tej is a Member of Parliament from Manipur constituency.

The Abdullah Family (in Jammu and Kashmir):

The Abdullah family has been at the top of Jammu Kashmir’s politics. It has been ever since the National Conference came into being by Sheikh Abdullah. Sheikh Abdullah was the Prime Minister under Maharaj Hari Singh. Hari Singh was the ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. After the independence, Sheikh’s son, Farooq Abdullah became the first Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. This mantel was later passed on to Farooq’s son Omar Abdullah. He served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and is the leader of the National Conference. Farooq’s daughter Sara Abdullah got married to Sachin Pilot. Sachin is a young politician in the INC and is a Member of Parliament from Ajmer constituency.

Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were recently changed to Union Territory. With this decision, the dynastical politics in Jammu and Kashmir may have seen its end days.

The Karunanidhi Family(in Tamil Nadu):

The Karunanidhi family in Tamil Nadu has been active in Tamil politics for over 60 years. M Karunanidhi is an Indian politician. He is the leader of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK). He has also served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on five occasions. His son, M.K. Stalin is the current leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He is also the ex-Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and is the Working President of the DMK.

M.K. Allegri, Karunanidhi’s eldest son was a former Union Minister in the UPA government led by Dr. Manmohan Singh. Kanimozhi, daughter of Karunanidhi, is currently a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. Karunanidhi’s nephew, late Murasoli Maran was a Union Minister along with his son Dayanidhi Maran in the UPA government.

The Yadav’s ( in Uttar Pradesh):

The family of Mulayam Singh Yadav has dominated India’s politically most important state for years. This family has more than 20 active politicians currently working in Uttar Pradesh. Mulayam Singh Yadav himself has been the Chief Minister of U.P. on three occasions. Akhilesh Yadav, his son is also a former CM of Uttar Pradesh. He is also the present President of the Samajwadi Party of Uttar Pradesh. Dimple Yadav, Akhilesh’s wife is a Member of Parliament from Kannauj constituency. Shivpal Singh Yadav who is Mulayam’s elder brother is an important political figure in Uttar
Pradesh. He is a member of the Samajwadi Party and has served many top ministries. Ramgopal Yadav, cousin of Mulayam and Shivpal Yadav is a member of the Rajya Sabha. Akshay Yadav, Ramgopal’s son is a Member of Parliament from Ferozabad constituency.

The Chautalas (in Haryana):

The Chautala family of Haryana is the best example of dynasty politics in India. The start of the dynastical rule in Haryana began when Om Prakash Chautala became the 8th CM of Haryana. He is the son of Chaudhary Devi Lal, former Deputy Prime Minister of India. Ajay Chautala, his elder son is a former Member of Parliament. He represented the Bhiwani constituency. His, younger brother, Abhay Chautala is the leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Legislative Assembly. Ajay’s two sons are Dijvijay and Dushyant Chautala. Dushyant Chautala is a former Member of Parliament of the 16th Lok Sabha. He is also the founder of the Jannayak Janta Party in Haryana.

Ajay and Abhay Chautala are currently engaged in a feud. It is happening to see who holds control of Haryana politics.

The Scindias(in Madhya Pradesh)

The Scindia family is the most powerful and influential in Madhya Pradesh. The start of the dynastical starts with Jivajirao Scindia. He was the last Maharaja of the princely state of Maharashtra. His widow wife, Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia got elected as a Lok Sabha member in 1963. She was first the member of the Congress Party. She later became an influential member of the BJP. Her son Madhavrao Scindia took on her mantel and became a Lok Sabha member in 1971 from the INC. After the passing of Madhavrao, his son Jotiraditya Scindia became a member of Lok Sabha in 2004.
The daughter of Vijayraje has been a BJP supporter. Vasundhara Raje Scindia participated and won five parliamentary elections from M.P. and Rajasthan. She later became the CM of Rajasthan in 2003. Vijayraje’s other daughter, Yashodhara Raje Scindia also became a Lok Sabha in 2004 and 2009. She represented the Gwalior constituency.

The Pawar Family(in Maharashtra):

Sharad Pawar is a famous figure in Indian politics. The roots of his family, run deep in Maharashtra’s politics. Sharad Pawar is an ex-Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He is also awarded the second-highest civilian honor, the Padma Vibhushan. Sharad Pawar’s younger brother, Pratap Pawar runs a Marathi newspaper daily newspaper, Sakal. Sharad’s nephew has served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. His grand-nephew Rohit Rajendra Pawar won the Zila Parishad election from Pune. With that, he made his debut in politics.

Sharad’s daughter, Supriya Sule is currently a Member of the Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha. She represents the Baramati parliamentary constituency.
