P. Chidambaram

Palaniappan Chidambaram, Indian Politician of INC. Currently servings as the Member of Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra. Former Finance Minister of India in Manmohan Singh, I.K. Gujral & H D. Devegowda’s Government. Also, Served as Home Minister of India from 2008 to 2012. P. Chidambaram has published various Books. Also, he write columns & Editorial for The Hindu.

Early Life

P.Chidambaram was Born on 16 September, 1945. Born in Kandanur, Madras Presidency (Now in Tamil Nadu). His father, Kandanur L. Ct.L Palaniappan Chettiar. His Mother, Lakshmi Achi. His Grandfather was wealthy Merchant & Banker of Chettinad.

Education

Achieved his secondary schooling from Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School. Passed one-year pre University course from Loyola College, Chennai. Completed Graduation in B.Sc in Statistics from Presidency College, Chennai. Holds a Degree in Bachelor of Laws, Madras College. He’s an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1968.

Jobs

He started writing articles under Radical Review column in The Hindu newspaper. Enrolled as Lawyer in Madras High Court & became senior advocate in 1984.

Political Career

Chidambaram was elected to Lokshabha from Sivaganga Constituency in 1984. Meanwhile, he was President of Tamil Nadu Youth Congress . As well as Genral Secretary of state congress commitee in Tamil Nadu. In 1985, he became Deputy Minister in Ministry of Commerce & Personnel. Further elevated, Minister of State for Minister of Home Affairs & Internal Security.

Finance Minister

P.V Narshimarao gave him Ministry of Commerce (independent charge). There made some important changes in India’s Import Export policy. In 1996, Chidambaram quit INC & joined Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC). Thereby, P. Chidambaram became Finance Minister of Coalition Government which TMC was part of. Afterwhich, he was appointed Finance Minister in UPA-1 in 2004.

 



Home Minister

After resignation of Shivraj Patil, he was appointed as Home Minister. Took a Bold decision of Shifting IPL to Africa in 2009. Due to clash of schedule of IPL with Genral Elections.

Controversies

1. He was Criticized for Failure of his ministry to prevent 2011 Bombings. Despite massive investment in security after 2008 Mumbai Attacks.

2. J. Jayalalithaa wrote to Election Commission regarding chidambaram’s victory in election. She claimed that P.Chidambaram has cheated in election for Victory.

3. As a Home Minister he gave Clean Chit to 1984 Sikh riot accused Jagdish Tytler. Thereby, Sikh Journalist assaulted Chidambaram in a press conference.

4. Subramanian Swamy accused P. Chidambaram’s son of corruption Charges. Actually, Kartik received 5% share of Aircel to get part ₹40 Billion paid by Maxis Communication for 74% share of Aircel. According to Swamy, P.Chidambaram held Foreign Investment Promotion Board who controlled the entire deal. Mainly, with Objective of Promoting Karti Chidambaram.
