Ramesh Pokhriyal - Human Resource Development Minister

Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank is an Indian Politician. He is also the Union Cabinet Minister of Human Resource Development. Although, he received the post in the second ministry of Prime Minister Modi. In the 17th Lok Sabha, he represents the Haridwar Parliamentary constituency of Uttrakhand. He also served as the Chief Minister of Uttrakhand from 2009 to 2011. He was the chairperson in the Committee on Government Assurances and a member of the 16th Lok Sabha.

Personal Life

Ramesh Pokhriyal was born on 15th July 1959. He was born to parents Paramanamd Pokhriyal and Vishambhari Devi. He was born in the village of Pinani in Pauri Garhwal, Uttrakhand.

Ramesh Pokhriyal completed his post-graduation in M.A. He did it from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Srinagar, Uttrakhand. He married Kusum Kanta Pokhriyal who died on 11th November 2012, after a brief illness. Arushi Nishank, Shreyashi, and Vidushi are their three daughters.

Political Career

Ramesh Pokhriyal got elected at first form the Karnaprayag constituency. It was in 1991 for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He got re-elected from the same constituency in 1993 and 1996. In 1997, he took the role of Uttranchal Development Minister. He also became the Chief Minister of Uttrakhand from 2009 to 2011. Currently, he is the Chairman of the government’s Assurance Committee. He is also a member of the 17th Lok Sabha. He represents the Haridwar constituency in Lok Sabha.

Pokhriyal was the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand. He was at it for 5 consecutive terms from 1991 to 2012. He also got appointed in Kalyan Singh’s ministry. He became the Cabinet Minister for Uttranchal Development. Furthermore, he got appointed as the Cabinet Minister for Cultural Fulfillment and Endowments. It was in Ram Prakash Gupta’s Cabinet in 1999.

Uttrakhand’s Ministry and Before PM Modi’s Cabinet

In 2007, Ramesh Pokhriyal got appointed as the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Language and Science departments in Uttrakhand. He became the youngest Chief Minister of Uttrakhand in the year 2009. He became an MLA for Vidhan Sabha from Doiwala, Dehradun constituency in 2012. Later, he resigned from Doiwala and got elected from Haridwar for Lok Sabha.



Joining PM Modi’s Ministry

Ramesh Pokhriyal was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister in the 2nd term of the Modi Government on 30th May 2019. He got the Ministry of Human Resource Development on 31st May 2019. He succeeded Prakash Javadekar.

Controversy

Ramesh Pokhriyal caused controversy in 2014. It was when he said in the parliament that astrology should get promoted. He talked about Astrology being above Science in the parliament. He also took examples of Lord Ganesha. He said that ancient Indians had the knowledge to transplant a severed head. When questioned about his two different dates of birth he replied that the discrepancy was due to the Hindu horoscope.

He got a D.Litt from the Open International University(OIU) of Colombo, Sri Lanka in the 1990s. He got it for his contribution to literature. A few years later, he received another D.Litt from the same university. It was for his contributions to Science. However, OIU was not registered either as a foreign or a domestic university in Sri Lanka.

After becoming the HRD Minister he issued a directive. It said that all files and note-sheets forwarded to him must be Hindi. It caused a flutter between the ministry officials. This was because not all of them were fluent in Hindi. Although the government of India always encouraged officials to have a working knowledge Hindi it was never compulsory.
