Randeep Surjewala

Randeep Surjewala is an Indian Politician from Haryana. He is a member of the Indian National Congress party. He is a former minister and an MLA in the Haryana State Legislature.

He was in charge of water supply and sanitation. He held the office of Parliamentary Affairs, Electronics and Information Technology too. He was also in charge of the Science and Technology and Public works as a minister in the cabinet of Haryana. 


Randeep Surjewala became the youngest minister in Haryana with the responsibility of Transport and Parliamentary Affairs. He is one of the official spokespersons of the Indian National Congress party since december 2017.

Early Life:

Randeep Singh Surjewala was born in Chandigarh on 3rd June 1967 to Ch. Shamsher Sigh Surjewala and Vidya. He was the youngest among his siblings and the fourth child. His three elder sisters being: Madhu Dala, Poonam Chaudhery and Neeru.


Randeep went to Adarsh Bal Mandir. He later Arya Higher Secondary School, Narwana for his high school. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce Honors from DAV School from 1981-1985. He did his Bachelor of Law(1985-1988) from the Faculty of Law, Punjab University in Chandigarh.

He was the Chairman of the Lawyer’s Forum. He was also a member of the Consultative Committee of the Faculty during his time in Law Faculty. He earned his master's degree in Political Science in April from the same University.

His Father:

Randeep’s Father Ch. Shamsher Singh Sujrewala was the Minister of Agriculture & Cooperatives of Haryana at the Randeep was born. He got expelled from Yadvindra State High School. The ruler of Sangrur expelled him for espousing the agenda of the Indian National Congress.

Shamsher Singh started his Law practice in September 1957. He started as an ace lawyer specializing in criminal law and jurisprudence. Despite that, he graduated from grassroots politics.

He first became the Managing Director of Central Co-operative Bank, Sangur in 1959-1960. Later he became the Chairman of Panchayat Samiti, Kalayat in 1961 and 1964.

Shamsher Singh is also a veteran Parliamentarian. He got elected to Haryana Legislative Assembly in 1967, 1977, 1982, 1991 and 2005. He also got into to Indian Parliament in 1993.


As a Lawyer:

Randeep started his practice of law as an advocate at the age of 21 in 1988. He started his practice with the solicitors firm Shroff & Company, New Delhi in 1988. He later joined the High Court of Punjab & Haryana at Chandigarh in 1991.

Organizational Roles:

He was the youngest General Secretary of the Haryana Pradesh Youth Congress at the age of 17. He became the Youngest Senator of the Punjab University, Chandigarh in 1992. He was an active participant in the rebuilding of Congress in Haryana.

Randeep Surjewala did it alongside his father who was then the Punjab Congress Committee(PCC) President. Randeep became the first “Haryanvi” to become the National President of the Indian Youth Congress(IYC).

He became Secretary of All India Congress Committee in August 2004. He was the youngest office bearer. He also became the President of PCC in December 2004 at the age of 37. The youngest President of PCC in the state.


He participated in the Haryana Legislative Assembly election four times. The party decided to put him against the former CM, Om Prakash Chautala. He defeated him twice in 1996 and 2005. It was a historic win over the then sitting Chief Minister.

As a Minister:

He became the youngest Cabinet Minister in Haryana Cabinet. It happened under the government of CM Bhupinder Singh in March 2005. He was Minister of Power, PWD and Parliamentary Affairs in September 2007. He also heads the Standing Policy Framing Committee on Civil Aviation.
